Martial Study

A Transformative Experience

The Teachers of Shaolin Hung Mei are committed to maintaining the rich heritage of traditional Chinese martial practice - its history, culture, philosophies and theories along with its variety of defense methods (see Martial Teaching). While recognizing that the Monks at Shaolin needed to train martial methods to defend the Temple from harm, we understand that they created an art which greatly improved their health and complimented their contemplative pursuits. Acquiring true competency in Shaolin requires development of three areas of study – SKILL, KNOWLEDGE AND CHARACTER. It is only through diligent work in all three that the practitioner can reach a deep level of understanding.

Shaolin training has often been referred to as “meditation in motion”. The student trains awareness and, through the training, improves his ability to remain intent on the event – whether it be a posture, the execution of a defensive technique, or bringing the mind into focus – at hand. Over time and training, the student’s skill at remaining aware improves and results in the frequency and magnitude of the mind’s deviating from the objective becoming less and less until the practitioner can remain immediately mindful. Such a skill can be applied to every other aspect of the student’s life.
